Question -

Read the assertion and reason carefully to mark the correct option out of the options given below:
(a)If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.
(b)If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
(c)If assertion is true but reason is false.
(d)If assertion is false but reason is true.
Assertion: 4-nitrophenol is more acidic than picric acid.
Reason: Phenol is a weaker acid than carbonic acid.

Options:
A .   A
B .   B
C .   C
D .   D
Answer: Option D
:
D

Picric acid is 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol. Electron withdrawing groups such as , – CN –X,~increase the acidity. Greater the number of electron withdrawing groups more is the acidic character i.e.2,4,6-trinitrophenol is more acidic than 4-nitrophenol. Carbonate ion is more resonance stabilized than phenoxide ion due to two equivalent resonance structures of carbonate ion. Thus, phenol is weaker acid than carbonic acid (H2CO3).
